Wait, what? ‘Despacito’ loses song of summer at MTV VMAs

This year’s MTV Video Music Awards are not even underway and already there’s been a major upset. During the pre-show Sunday, it was revealed that rapper Lil Uzi Vert’s XO TOUR Llif3 won the fan-voted song of summer award, upsetting Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s presumed favorite, Despacito. The infectious remix of the latter featuring Justin Bieber has been inescapable these past few months, quickly becoming the most-streamed song ever, globally, and reigning on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for

15 consecutive weeks (nearly tying the 16-week run of Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s chart-topping One Sweet Day more than two decades ago). Fans were particularly nonplussed by Despacito’s snub, given that it wasn’t nominated in any other categories. (MTV said in a statement to the Associated Press that Universal Music Latin Entertainment never submitted the video for consideration, although UMLE said the network didn’t ask the label to submit Despacito until after nominations were announced.)
